KW Triple ‘A’ Award Nominee – Tess Hokanson

Press Release – Kenyon-Wanamingo High School Student Nominated for Triple “A” Award

Date – March 21, 2018

Tess Hokanson, K-W High School senior, has been selected to represent our school in the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award program, Matt Ryan, KWHS Principal announced. Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple "A" Award) is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a “B” or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities. Tess is a very active student at Kenyon-Wanamingo High School.

Tess Hokanson, daughter of Brian and Diane Hokanson of rural Wanamingo, has been involved in the following activities: Cross Country, Basketball, Track, Band, FFA, Student Council, and National Honor Society. Tess has taken multiple AP courses and is currently taking College Algebra. She has challenged herself academically with a rigorous course load and has a 4.0 GPA (4.327 weighted GPA). Tess plans to attend The University of South Dakota and major in Dental Hygiene.

As part of the Triple “A” Award application process students were asked to share how their involvement in the arts, athletics, and academics has developed them as a person. Tess wrote the following in response.

“Whether big or small, goals help us to strive for improvement and accomplish the object of our ambition. Setting goals is especially important in the areas of arts, academics, and athletics. I have learned that setting goals is a crucial step in achieving maximum productivity as an individual and together as a whole. Setting reachable goals is a skill that applies to all aspects of one’s life and has helped me develop as a musician, student, and athlete.

Having ambitions is what makes us each unique and reflects on what we view as important. I set goals on a regular basis, always striving for success, but accepting the possibility of failure. Each day I aim to be the best that I can be and do my best in my activities. Whether my goal is to ace my upcoming exam, hit all the correct notes on my trumpet, score 10 points at my next basketball game, or run my fastest time in the upcoming race, I can grow with each experience regardless of the outcome.

Through these experiences, I have become a goal-oriented person, which will stay with me for the rest of my life. Goal setting has benefited me in the classroom, on the court/field, and in band. I’ve worked hard to maintain my grades, serve as a leader and mentor in the band room, and be counted on as a captain and dependable player in athletics. I am forever indebted to the arts, academics, and athletics.”

Matt Ryan, KWHS Principal stated, “Tess is a student that K-W Schools and the Kenyon and Wanamingo communities should be proud of! She is a highly respected student by her peers and staff at Kenyon Wanamingo High School. Tess has been successfully involved in many parts of high school life at K-W and has a bright future ahead of her! If someone asked me what I could tell them about Tess, the first words out of my mouth would be, ‘What a great kid!’ Tess is definitely an example of what makes KW great!”

Triple "A" Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League's member schools and administrative regions. Congratulations Tess and best of luck to her in her bright future!
